மணிக்கு McCowan and Ell mere சந்திப்பில் தொடங்கியது.

பேச்சாளர்களாக,  Mr. Raymond Cho MPP, Mr. Gary Anandasangaree MP, Mr. Ajith Jinadasa (Political Activists), Mr. Rahman (Political Activists), Mr. John Arque (Amnesty International Canada), Prof. Sharryn Aiken (Queen’s Law)

We strongly condemn the attacks on the Muslim community in Sri Lanka! We stand against the continuing Sinhala – Buddhist Chauvinist trends and partiality!!

There have been continuous and widespread attacks on the Muslim community in Ampara and Kandy districts since last week by Sinhala-Buddhist chauvinistic elements. Though it seems that hate violence and crime have subsided for now, violence of this nature has been prevalent for the last few years. Buddhist monks and the members of the groups that had carried out attacks from Kiribathgoda to Aluthgama with the support of politicians in the past, have overtly joined together in these attacks. There are abundant video evidences and eyewitnesses who report through internet and social media. However, there have been no effective action by the government to arrest, bring the perpetrators to the court of justice, to stop the violence or to provide proper protection for victims and the vulnerable community that is continuously being targeted. Despite an island-wide enforcement of emergency law by the government there is no progress in bringing the violence under control; instead, attacks have been uncontrolled and continuous. Over 70 business enterprises and more than 25 Mosques were set on fire or destroyed. No information on casualties and wounded are available as of now. It is reported that in many cases, special police and armed forces deployed to control the situation have acted as mere spectators. Past experience in declarations of emergency show that they have been used to silence and control the victims/ affected groups. This is also confirmed by the attacks that continue today. All past governments in Sri Lanka have nurtured Sinhala-Buddhist Chauvinism and often intentionally sabotaged the peace and harmony among ethnic groups to sustain their political survival. The government under President Mithriplana Srisena came to power claiming good governance and a change to this situation. After coming to power, it neither focused on measures that could bring unity, harmony and reconciliation among all ethnic groups in Sri Lanka, nor brought anyone who had acted against ethnic harmony before the law. After the so-called good-governance-government came to power, the lawsuits filed in the court by people were prolonged. The government did not attempt to control the groups such as Bodu Bala Sena that continuously manufacture hate speeches and actions against Muslims. The government has not contemplated with any effective actions and practices to assure and confirm its proclamation that all ethnic groups and citizens in Sri Lanka have equal rights. It has not yet taken any actions on people who publicly staged hate speeches and published flyers and brochures. In fact, this kind of imprudent conduct of the government reconfirms that this government wants the country to be ethnically divided and be a fertile land for the growth of hate and violence. This is why, simple, misleading, fabricated messages such as the one claiming contraceptives are mixed with food at Muslim restaurants and mere street fights between intoxicated persons are resulting in huge ethnic collisions. This is the situation Sinhala- Buddhist chauvinist individuals and groups need. Politicians use this situation to achieve political power. The situation is constructed in such a way that majority of the general Sinhala public believe that attacks of this kind are justifiable. The position of the general public has made the situation complicated and worse. Democratic voices in the Sinhala community condemning the dangerous situation are feeble compared to the dominant chauvinistic voice. Similar to all past ethnic collisions, the one being staged now is premeditated and is carried out by Sinhala - Buddhist chauvinistic powers. The ethnic conflict and collision are ultimate results of propaganda by those powers that describe ethnic groups other than Sinhala as dangers and instill hatred among public. Though this government does not directly support this, we have no other option but to conclude that the government is assisting the perpetrators by not taking bold and courageous actions and controlling the situation. We, as a civil society in Canada strongly condemn the ethno-racial attacks against Muslim community by Sinhala- Buddhist Chauvinists in Sri Lanka. We demand the government to bring an end to the continuing attacks, to bring the perpetrators before the court of justice, to provide compensation for the lost assets, and take responsibility for the rehabilitation of the affected people. We humbly request all who believe in democratic values -the public, social groups, social activists, writers, media personals, international human rights activists and groups, and Canadian politicians to urge the government to take necessary action to implement these actions. We urge all individuals and groups who believe in creating a positive and fair socio-political environment where all ethnic groups could exercise their freedom and equality while enjoying their uniqueness and diversity in Sri Lanka to voice for these actions.
